Quarterly Camping Trip: The Bluffs Conquer Big Bear

Ryan Saco

Recently, the women at The Bluffs Sober Living went on a camping trip. We packed up and headed out Friday afternoon, ready to get out of the city and spend a couple days in nature. We spent weeks planning and getting ready for the trip. It was about doing something different together—and getting out of self.

Friday was about getting set up. Tents went up, firewood was gathered, and dinner was on the grill before dark. Everyone pitched in without being asked. Some cooked, some kept the fire going, and some just made sure the vibe stayed solid. We had hot dogs, burgers, and a fire big enough to keep us warm. After dinner, we stayed up around the fire, playing music, talking, and just enjoying being off our phones for once.

The weather wasn’t ideal—cold, a little windy, and not exactly comfortable. But honestly, that made it better. It forced everyone to stick close, stay in the moment, and make the best of it. That’s kind of the point anyway, and an invaluable skill while in addiction recovery.

Saturday morning we made coffee and breakfast and went on a hike. The trail wasn’t easy, but the views were worth it. Some talked the whole way, some just zoned out and took it all in. It gave everyone a chance to connect in a different way. Nature has a way of doing that.

We came back to camp and kept it simple. Steaks on the grill, music playing, and the fire going again. People who never would’ve met outside of recovery were laughing, connecting, and showing up for each other. That’s what this is about.

The second night got even colder, but no one complained. Layers and a good fire were enough. We stayed close, told stories, and just appreciated being out there together. No distractions, no pressure—just a solid night.

Sunday morning was all about packing up and heading home. Everyone helped. No dragging feet. You could tell the weekend meant something. It didn’t have to be some life-changing experience. It was just real. A group of women in recovery doing something that felt good.

Trips like that remind us that connection doesn’t have to be complicated. Just show up and be a part of it.

And like always, the next weekend we were back at the beach.

Beach trips have become a weekly thing at The Bluffs. Every weekend we hit the sand, whether it’s sunny or cloudy. Some women swim, others chill with music and snacks. It’s low-key, but it matters. It’s a break from the routine, a chance to breathe, and a reminder that sobriety can actually be fun.

Newer residents have said it’s one of the first times they’ve felt relaxed and included. That’s the goal—to build something real. Not just a place to stay sober, but a place to actually start enjoying life again.

Whether it’s camping in the cold or laying out at the beach, it all helps. We talk, we laugh, and we keep each other going. It’s about showing up and doing life together.

We’ll keep doing what works. Camping, beach days, late-night talks, whatever it takes to stay connected. Because at The Bluffs, recovery isn’t just about staying sober. It’s about building a life you actually want to live.
